Abby's New Smile!

About a year or so ago when at the dentist for a normal check up, Abby's x-rays showed that she had an extra tooth in her front, middle gums that would have to be removed at some point to prevent interference with her permanent teeth.  Earlier in the summer she had hit her mouth hard and damaged one of her top baby teeth and it had turned gray (lovely!).  We had to take her in to check on that tooth and were told it was time for the extra tooth to come out and that the damaged tooth would have to come out too because of it.  We were given the option of either going to an oral surgeon where she would have to get an IV and be put under or doing it in the dentist's office with sedation but she would be awake.  The dentist wasn't sure if the sedation would be enough to keep her calm and still but at the surgeons we would have to wait for awhile for a consultation, pre-approval, and scheduling the surgery and the thought of having to give a 4 year old an IV was kind of scary!  We opted to do it in the dentist's office.

This past Thursday was her big day.  Steve and I were both very nervous, more so than her.  Our Abby was SO brave and she did awesome.  The sedation worked great for her and she was still enough for the dentist to do his thing.  He said she was a rock star and was so impressed!  We take our kiddos to a pediatric dentist and they are so great there.  We have only had positive experiences and they are so great with the kids and making them feel comfortable.  Abby was a little out of it and wobbly for awhile after but we just took it easy and watched some movies on the couch.  It's quite the gaping hole and has some healing to do but she is getting used to her new smile.  She was very excited that because of this she got a visit from the tooth fairy!  She brought her her very own tooth pillow for when she loses teeth and $2 for her 2 teeth.

(In case you are wondering, this is the opposite tooth from the one that Preston had removed when he was 2 and was missing for years.  Apparently our kiddos can't hold onto there two front teeth! Oh well, at least she is older so she won't have to wait quite as long for a new tooth.)
