Christmas Eve was kind of a busy one with travel preparations and Christmas preparations, not to mention that everything seems to take so much effort because I am so exhausted all of the time. It was a nice snowy day and we spent the day inside with Christmas music and then had a lovely dinner of ham, funeral potatoes, a citrus jello salad, and rolls. The kids were so, so excited that it was finally Christmas, they just couldn't stand it! After dinner we talked to the kids about the Christmas story since they know most of it now and could help tell it. Then we read some Christmas-y books that we have and the kids got their Christmas pj's (yay for Children's place where I got each of these for $4.50 or less). The kids had a hard time falling asleep because they were so excited.
Once they were asleep, Santa got to work. He had gotten each of them a couple of small things along with some treats and a coloring book for their stockings. From us we had gotten each of the kids something they want, need, wear, and read. We did this last year and absolutely loved it so we will be doing it each year. It's very easy to keep things small and simple that way.
The kids woke up at 6am! We actually let Kaley sleep since she we knew she wouldn't be patient to watch others open gifts. We walked into the family room and was shocked to see that what Santa had brought was much more than when I went to bed. Steve quietly informed me that we had gotten money to help with Christmas from a couple different sources (he won't tell me who!) so he got to be the Santa for our family including a new case for my phone that I so desperately needed. It was a very pleasant surprise (even if it means being the source of charity once again), and Steve loved being able to surprise us also. Our Christmas morning was also filled out by gifts that were sent by Steve's family which was just so nice. We all had fun opening presents and then got to enjoy a yummy breakfast of caramel sticky buns, bacon and eggs. After that it was Kaley's turn and she was spoiled with clothes from her Grammy and Aunt Angie.
The rest of the day was SO relaxing. We still had to pack and get ready but we were able to just hang out as a family and let the kids play and we stayed in our pj's all day. Although it would be nice to have family close, we love being able to have Christmas with just our family sometimes. It was such a wonderful day!
