We said goodbye to the first major purchase we made as a couple... our 2000 Ford Escort. This little car was so good to us, so reliable and great gas mileage. Steve has been the one to drive it since we had Preston, not the manliest vehicle ever but thankful he didn't care all that much! With this baby coming soon, it made me very nervous that our secondary vehicle couldn't actually fit our whole family (the back seat only has 2 seat belts, besides the fact that it's tiny!). Steve started a casual search for an old SUV or truck that might work for us. We finally enlisted the help of a friend in our ward who flips cars. He was excited to help us out and within a few days he was able to sell our escort for more than we thought we could get and found us an SUV for the same amount. It was so crazy how fast it went but we were so grateful for the help of someone who knows their stuff about things like this.
So our new vehicle is a blue 2002 Ford Expedition... polar opposite of what we had! It's in pretty good shape and nice to have such a big vehicle to transport people or stuff without car seats in the way. Steve will be driving this car and although the gas mileage isn't great, we'll be using the van for driving the kids around and for any long distances. And Steve doesn't mind that it does look a little manlier!
As part of our car changes, we also said goodbye to Steve's '86 Mazda little red truck. The signal lights have been broken on that truck for some time and Steve finally took it in. Turns out it would take $400-$600 to get it fixed! We didn't want to put that kind of money into that truck. So with all of the help that we got from our friend, we let him have the truck to thank him (which apparently he had had his eye on for a while). I know Steve was sad to see that truck go, since it had a lot of sentimental value. Preston also loved that truck but he was excited about the prospect of lots adventures with this new car that he didn't mind too much.
