Winter Welcome...

The temps have definitely been cold lately but winter officially kicked into full gear this past weekend, whether we like it or not! You'll have to forgive me because I feel like all I talk about lately is the weather, but it really is a big deal for us right now and such a HUGE change!

Our winter welcome started Saturday as Steve and I headed to the temple for the sealing of Steve's sister Angie and her husband Tyson to her son Ty. We were happy to be there and absolutely love that we now live only 10 minutes from a temple. What a great blessing! When we came out everything was covered in white and the largest snowflakes ever were falling. The snow only got worse and that 10 minute drive took about 30. We were all supposed to head to Pocatello (1 hour away) for a luncheon for the families but the weather was so bad that everyone told us to stay behind and not risk it. We were bummed we had to miss out but didn't want that day to be the day to learn how to drive in the snow.

We spent the rest of the day buying the rest of the snow gear we didn't have: a good shovel, boots for Steve, a shovel for Preston, hats, etc. Our neighbor had just bought a snowblower and was nice enough to do our driveway for us. So my boys headed out to the rest of the walkway and back porch. Preston was very excited to help and took his job very seriously. The bonus of the day is that Steve and his dad found a little snowblower on Craigslist that Steve's dad was able to pick up for us. We haven't used it yet (our neighbors are too nice and keep doing our driveway for us) but I know Steve's excited about not having to shovel.

Well, the snow has continued to fall but it let up enough yesterday afternoon that we decided to brave the weather and run some errands. Steve drove very carefully with all of the ice and snow on the roads but even with that we got into our first snow sliding accident! YIKES! We slid on some ice and rear ended a mini van in front of us. Thankfully we weren't going very fast at all and everyone is safe and fine. The car got a little damage on the front but runs fine thank goodness! Let's just say that our little accident didn't help our attitude towards the snow. We are still trying to figure out why people live here!! The snow is horrible, the cold is no fun, we hate having to bundle up so much just to check the mail, and it's so scary to drive. I guess all things that we're going to have to get used to.

To top it all off, we have an official BLIZZARD warning all day!! We are staying inside for sure, but it definitely looks like a blizzard out there. It's snowing like crazy, the wind is insane, schools are closed, and the snow drifts in our backyard are like 3-4 feet high. Everyone assures us that this is unusual and that it's never this bad at Thanksgiving time, I hope they're right, because this is out of control!!

These are our back porch steps... there are 3 steps, but you can only see 2!

This was this morning, there is no trace of our driveway left anymore.

Here's hoping the weather improves enough for us to make it to Pocatello for Thanksgiving or we're on our own!

Okay, so it is a little unusual. But you certainly get more than us in Boise. We have an unusual amount right now too. I like it this time of year. I can't imagine the holidays without it. It's January and February that I'm so done with it!!!
But you do get used to it. I'm super used to driving in it but I still try to limit my driving when it's bad. And...4 WHEEL DRIVE!!! Makes a HUGE difference. Or snow tires. Unfortunately they aren't cheap. We are needing to put some on Shane's car right now and don't want to fork out the money. Bummer.
Anyway, I can't imagine how much of an adjustment this is for you! Just bundle up and drink lots of hot chocolate!!!
